Connect a device to the network

Access your photos, files and services from a smartphone, tablet or personal computer. At home, it’s automatic; elsewhere, a secure little app bridges the gap.

Inside a zone

At home (or anywhere with a gateway), there’s virtually nothing to do:

  1. Connect the device to the WiFi or the zone’s internal network.
  2. You’re done. Addressing, Internet access (filtered, ad-free) and services are configured automatically.
  3. Open the zone’s homepage in your browser: all services are listed there.

A single identity

A single username unlocks all services (SSO). Log in once and find your access everywhere.

  • Forgot your password? Ask your administrator to reset it.
  • Mobile apps (photos, files, email): enter the service address provided by the administrator, then your usual username.

From Outside

Outside a zone, the Tailscale 🡕 app connects your device to the network, as if you were at home.

  1. Install Tailscale on the device (iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, Linux).

  2. Choose the server: the address given by your administrator, such as https://headscale.domain.tld.

    • Android: settings (top right) → Accounts → ⋮ → Use an alternate server
    • iPhone, iPad: account icon → Log in… → menu → Use custom coordination server
    • Windows: in PowerShell, tailscale login --login-server <address>
    • macOS: Option + click the icon → Debug → Custom Login Server → Add Account…
    • Linux: sudo tailscale login --login-server <address>

    Your server reminds you of the procedure at /windows and /apple (https://headscale.domain.tld/windows).

  3. Log in with your usual credentials: the network login page opens, as for the other services. The first time, authorize Headscale VPN.

  4. Confirm the device: the page shows its name, click Confirm registration.

  5. You’re all set. The web services in your zones respond at their usual address; for file sharing, ask your administrator for access.
