Online services

All cloud services are open-source and have their own online documentation. But here are a few useful introductions.

Vaultwarden

Vaultwarden is my digital vault: passwords, one-time codes (2FA), bank cards, and confidential notes. Everything is encrypted, automatically backed up, and by default only I have access.

Why choose it over LastPass or 1Password? It is compatible with Bitwarden apps, but my data stays at home rather than on a vendor’s server.

Important: Bitwarden configuration

By default, the Bitwarden client (see below) is set to “bitwarden.com”. You must select “self-hosted” then enter the Vaultwarden URL to use Bitwarden with the cloud.

Useful features

• Share access with others using “collections”.
• Organize passwords and keys into folders.
• Send confidential information using “sends”.

Bitwarden: the client application

Bitwarden can be installed as a browser plugin or as a mobile app. It simplifies my life with automatic filling of my credentials and passwords, plus many other features. Bitwarden can do everything Vaultwarden (the server, which holds the data) can do.

Kanidm (idm)

Kanidm is the guardian of my digital identity: it verifies who I am and opens the doors to all services with a single login (SSO). No need to remember a password for each service.

Modern and built for security, it goes further than traditional directories:

• Login with passkeys and security keys (WebAuthn), without a password.
• SSO standard (OAuth2 / OpenID Connect) recognized by all services.
• Fine-grained group and permission management.

Immich (photos)

Immich manages my photos and videos with the convenience of Google Photos, but at home: no paid quota, no commercial analysis of my memories.

Highlights:

• Automatic backup of smartphone photos (Android / iOS).
• AI-powered search and recognition of faces, places and objects, locally.
• Shared albums, memories, map… a real family photo library.

To sync my smartphone:

1. Install the Immich app on the smartphone.
2. Set up the backup by providing the Immich URL.

Nextcloud (files & data)

Nextcloud is my personal cloud, replacing Google Drive or Dropbox: files, contacts and calendars synced across all my devices, and shareable with a link.

Highlights:

• Files synced (computer, mobile) and link sharing.
• Contacts and calendars (CardDAV / CalDAV) for phone and email.
• Online document editing, tasks, forms and many applications.

Matrix (messages & video)

Matrix is my messaging platform, like WhatsApp or Telegram, but encrypted, open and hosted at home. My app is Element 🡕.

Highlights:

• Messages, files and audio / video calls with end-to-end encryption.
• Bridges to WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, Signal, Discord… (everything in one app).
• Federated network: chat with other Matrix servers, or stay within your own bubble.

Jellyfin (movies & music)

Jellyfin is my home media library, like Netflix: movies, series, music and photos, on TV, computer or phone.

Highlights:

• 100% free and open-source, no subscription or paid features (unlike Plex).
• Apps for TV, mobile, browser and media streaming devices.
• Posters, subtitles and metadata fetched automatically.

Open WebUI (AI)

Open WebUI is my generative AI assistant, like ChatGPT, but conversations never leave home. It runs on Ollama 🡕 with locally-executed models.

Highlights:

• No data sent to a third-party service, history stored locally.
• Multiple models to choose from depending on the need.
• Chat with my documents, web search and custom prompts.

Outline (notes)

Outline is my notes and documentation space, personal or shared, like Notion but free and sovereign.

Highlights:

• Fast markdown editor with powerful search.
• Organization into collections and nested documents.
• Sharing, collaborative writing and checklists.

Mealie (recipes)

Mealie stores all my cooking recipes and helps me organize meals.

Highlights:

• Import a recipe from a simple URL.
• Meal planner and shopping lists generated automatically.

Searxng (search)

SearXNG is my ad-free, tracker-free search engine. It queries dozens of other engines (Google, Bing…) and aggregates results without revealing my identity.

Highlights:

• Metasearch engine: cross-references many sources in a single search.
• No ads, no advertising profile built behind my back.
• Search for images, videos, maps, news…

AdguardHome (ad-blocking firewall)

AdGuard Home filters ads, trackers and malicious websites for the whole network, directly at the gateway level. Result : faster and safer browsing on all devices, without installing anything on each one.

Key features :

• Network-wide (DNS) ad and tracker blocking, for all devices.
• Protection against malicious domains and tracking.
• Parental controls and per-device filtering.

Forgejo (git forge)

Forgejo is my software forge, a personal and sovereign GitHub (free fork of Gitea 🡕). Beyond code, Git is also an excellent way to organize, version and back up your documents.
